Angelika Kraemer, Director of the Language Resource Center at Cornell and an affiliated senior lecturer in the Department of German Studies, received the Michigan World Language Association’s (MIWLA) Barbara Ort-Smith Award Oct. 24 at MIWLA’s annual conference in Lansing, Michigan.
The Barbara Ort-Smith Award is the most prestigious award a professional in the field of world languages can receive in the state of Michigan. The award honors those who have shown a strong commitment to the profession, manifesting itself in leadership and the promotion of excellence in world language education.
Kraemer was recognized for her many contributions to world language education in the state of Michigan and beyond. As former Executive Associate Director of the Center for Language Teaching Advancement at Michigan State University and an affiliated faculty member in the German Studies Program, Kraemer led a variety of initiatives to support and expand language education, including launching MSU’s Community Language School, which connected university students with K-12 learners across Michigan, and organizing international teaching internships for MSU undergraduates. Her other contributions to the profession include regular presentations at national and international conferences, and publications in various journals and edited volumes. She is also a co-host of the popular second language acquisition-focused podcast Talkin’ L2 with BVP.
Kraemer’s leadership in the profession includes service on the Executive Board of the American Association of Teachers of German-Michigan, and the MIWLA Executive Board as President and Executive Secretary. She currently serves as Co-Editor of the AATG journal Die Unterrichtspraxis/Teaching German, is Co-Coordinator of the International Association for Language Learning Technology (IALLT) Survey Committee, and was recently elected President-Elect of IALLT.
The Michigan World Language Association is a state association for language education professionals from all levels of instruction and representing all languages.
