New podcast episode explores racism and resilience

Lived Experience,” a new episode of the “What Makes Us Human?” podcast series, explores global racial hierarchies and their remedies. The podcast’s fifth season – “What Do We Know about Inequality?” – showcases the newest thinking across academic disciplines about inequality.

“Cultural resilience is the spine of the black experience, the supportive apparatus that allows resistance to the inequality that is a global problem,” says Carole Boyce Davies, professor of Africana studies and English in the College of Arts and Sciences, in her podcast.

The author of “Black Women, Writing and Identity: Migrations of the Subject,” “Left of Karl Marx: The Political Life of Black Communist Claudia Jones” and “Caribbean Spaces: Escapes from Twilight Zones,” Boyce Davies’ is engaged in an ongoing study of black women and political leadership in their own words. Her research focuses on interviews with black women who are political leaders, an examination of their paths to leadership and how they use their power for the advancement of relevant communities.

The “What Makes Us Human?” podcast is produced by the College of Arts and Sciences in collaboration with the Cornell Broadcast Studios and features audio essays written and recorded by Cornell faculty. New episodes are released each Thursday through the Fall semester, airing on WHCU and WVBR.

The episodes are also available for download on iTunes and SoundCloud and for streaming on the A&S humanities page, where text versions of the essays are also posted.
