A&S plans host of events for Reunion 2018

Along with a time for alumni to see old friends and visit campus, Reunion 2018 will also include a wide array of activities from the College of Arts & Sciences, including events focused on everything from astronomy to physics to public service.

The June 7-10 weekend will also feature open houses to showcase the work and collections of various departments and plenty of opportunities for alumni to socialize and reminisce.

Arts & Sciences highlights include:

  • "Hail CAESAR: How Cornell Is Going to Unravel the Mystery of How Star Stuff Became Us,” 1:30-2:30 p.m., Friday, June 8, presented by Alex Hayes ’03, MEng ’04, assistant professor of astronomy. The talk will be held in the Rhodes-Rawlings Auditorium in Klarman Hall.
  • Breakfast with the Dean, 8:30-9:30 a.m., Saturday, June 9. Alumni, family and friends are welcome to attend a continental breakfast hosted by Gretchen Ritter '83, the Harold Tanner Dean of the College of Arts & Sciences, in the Groos Family Atrium of Klarman Hall.
  • “Unwanted Child: How U.S. Alliance Gave Birth to Racial Nationalism in Japan,” 1-2 p.m., Saturday, June 9, presented by Kristin Roebuck, assistant professor of history. The talk will be held in the Rhodes-Rawlings Auditorium, Klarman Hall.
  • “Why Mexicans Come: Then, Now and Future,” 2:30-3:30 p.m., Saturday, June 9, presented by Filiz Garip, professor of sociology. The talk will be held in the Rhodes-Rawlings Auditorium, Klarman Hall.

Another highlight will be a “Class of '83 Forum: "A Lifetime Commitment to Public and Private Engagement—From Cornell's Hill to Capitol Hill, and Beyond” which will feature four distinguished alumni who will discuss how Cornell readied them for careers of service in both public and private sectors.  Opening remarks will be given by Matt Palumbo '83 and Gretchen Ritter '83, Harold Tanner Dean of Arts and Sciences and professor of government, will act as moderator. Panelists include Alan Krueger '83 (economics), Seth Harris '83 (labor), Doug Braunstein '83 (finance), and Ruben King-Shaw '83 (healthcare). It will be held in the David L. Call Alumni Auditorium in Kennedy Hall from 10-11:30 a.m. Friday, June 8.

  • Anthropology Collection: 150 McGraw Hall, Friday, 10:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m.
  • Astronomy and Space Sciences: 105 Space Sciences Building, Friday, 1 p.m.-4 p.m.
  • Chemistry and Chemical Biology: Baker Lab Lobby, Friday, 1:30-3 p.m.
  • Fuertes Observatory: Fuertes Observatory, 209 Cradit Farm Drive, Friday 9 p.m.-midnight

Favorite Physics Demonstrations:

Alumni, family and friends are invited to view and participate in educational lecture demonstrations by the physics faculty. Explanations are designed for all ages and hands-on demonstrations will be available. Refreshments will be provided.

All-Day Kids Activities:

There will be activities for children in the Mathematics Library including a scavenger hunt, mathematical toys and puzzles in Room 420-C. There will be showings of the movie, Flatland, a Journey of Many Dimensions (2007; 35 minutes) in Room 420-D. There will also be a 3D printer on display.
