Aesthetics & Media Studies

Aesthetics & Media Studies is one of the core strengths of Romance Studies at Cornell. Research and teaching in media studies concern the various forms of artistic practice and communication in contemporary society, including verbal, aural, visual, and multimedia practices. Media studies analyzes works in a wide range of genres from painting and sculpture to photography, film, television, video-art, performance, installation, and internet-based art. It examines the history of different media from the ancient origins of the book to today’s social network-based narratives. In addition, faculty working in aesthetic and media studies focus on the philosophical underpinnings of artistic and communicative practices. Engaging with a vast body of theoretical work within and beyond Romance Studies, we strive to promote debate and deeper understanding of the potential, limits and specificities of the various aspects of the contemporary media landscape and its social and political implications.
