Community and urban sociology are foundational topics in sociology. The shift from rural to urban society is one of the largest and most profound shifts in the history of society. This area of concentration focuses on understanding the nature of this shift, as well as the consequences of living in the types of communities that result from it (especially in urban areas). Students learn classic urban ethnographic techniques as well as modern approaches to understanding the nature of life in contemporary urban societies (e.g., analysis of nationally representative survey data).
